In crafting the design for the cover of "Surreal Photomontage: The Photographer’s Digital Trickery Handbook,” by Barry Huggins & Ian Probert, I fashioned every detail to encapsulate the essence of the book's thematic exploration.
The observer is first drawn to the sight of floating orbs suspended in space, each encapsulating a world of its own. These orbs evoke the notion of alternate dimensions, windows to other worlds where anything is possible. Against a backdrop of twinkling stars, the orbs float among iconic symbols of human exploration—the Hubble Space Telescope and the Space Shuttle Atlantis—hinting at the intersection of the fantastical and the tangible. A full moon hangs in the upper right corner, while the foreground contains trees and power lines which tie the entire scene to earth. Every aspect of this project is comprised of my own original photography with the exception of the moon, Hubble, and Atlantis, which are courtesy of NASA.
For the textual elements such as the book title and accompanying text, I selected a sleek and contemporary typeface. This choice was made to ensure clarity and legibility while lending a sense of boldness and sophistication. By opting for a clean and modern font, I aimed to maintain visual harmony within the composition, avoiding any unnecessary distractions that might detract from the overall impact of the image.
The culmination of these elements provides a glimpse into a realm where reality merges with imagination. It is my fervent hope that this surreal artwork serves as a fitting introduction to the captivating journey that awaits within the pages of the book.
