In this book design of the literary classic, “The Scarlet Pimpernel,” I designed and illustrated every aspect of the jacket front cover, back cover, side panels, and interior to capture the essence of Baroness Orczy's masterpiece.
For the title, I chose an old-world typeface which invokes eras of historical significance. The image of an impeccably dressed Sir Percy Blakely, eyes obscured by the brim of his jewel-encrusted hat, the tiny smirk of his mouth hinting at the secret knowledge he possesses, captures the spirit of intrigue contained within the story. The humble, wayside flower known as a scarlet pimpernel adorns his hat, the iconic symbol of his secret identity.
Turning to the back cover reveals a scene of hope in the form of an empty prison cell. Beams of light from an unseen window cast dramatic shadows across the cold stone floor, illuminating a cot where a despairing soul had languished, now revealing only the calling card of the mysterious rescuer. The quotation appears in a classic typeface, harmonizing seamlessly with the author's name and accompanying text on the side panels.
I opted for a warm pink hue for the side panels, invoking the romantic ambiance of the historical period. I enhanced the photograph of Baroness Orczy to create an aged, dreamlike effect. The front side panel features a single scarlet pimpernel flower and the same classic typeface throughout. Inside the pages of the book, readers will discover an elegant layout with bold illustrations of the chapter numbers and thoughtfully chosen fonts, spacing, and formatting that complement the beauty of Orczy's prose.
